Description

The building consists of cow houses, a cartshed, and a granary, along with an attached pump and trough, located approximately 10 metres southeast of Plaish Park Farmhouse. It dates from the early to mid-17th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th and late 19th centuries. The structure is timber framed with red brick nogging on a coursed sandstone rubble plinth and partly rebuilt in uncoursed red and grey sandstone rubble, featuring red brick window heads and plain tile roofs.

The building has four 17th-century framed bays aligned approximately northwest to southeast, with an 18th-century cow house added to the northeast and a 19th-century cartshed added to the southwest. The framing includes square panels with long straight tension braces. The northeast front features a 17th-century range with a small loft window on the left and a pitching opening on the right, along with a small ground-floor window off-centre to the right and two boarded stable-type doors, one of which has only one leaf.

On the left-hand return front, there are nine external stone steps leading up to a segmental-headed boarded granary door. The rear has been rebuilt and partly extended with the cartshed, which has a higher ridge. The adjoining 18th-century red sandstone cow house has a central boarded loft door, three narrow loft vents, and two ground-floor segmental-headed slatted windows flanking a central segmental-headed stable-type door, with the left-hand window being a blocked segmental-headed door.

Inside the timber-framed part, there are collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts and v-struts, timber-framed cross walls, and a ground-floor ceiling with chamfered cross beams and chamfered joists, suggesting that at least part of this building may have been used for domestic purposes in the past. The pump and trough in front of the 18th-century cow house includes a cast iron pump with a circular shaft, a splayed spout, a fluted top with a curved handle, and a ribbed domed cap with a large finial, alongside a rectangular grey sandstone trough. Plaish Park Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
