Description
The Court House is a disused farmhouse that was later converted into a pair of cottages. It dates from the mid- to late 16th century and the late 17th century, with significant rebuilding and extensions occurring in the mid- to late 18th century. The building is constructed from uncoursed and roughly coursed yellow and brown sandstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings. The right gable end is timber-framed, with weatherboarding and corrugated iron cladding, topped by a plain tile roof.
The structure has a three-cell plan and is one storey high with an attic. It features square panel framing and three gabled eaves dormers, each with 2-light wooden casements. There is an integral brick end stack on the left and a brick ridge stack off-centre to the right. The front has three windows, all 2-light wooden casements with segmental brick heads, although the right-hand arch has collapsed. There are also two doorways, with the left one having a segmental arch, and a straight joint to the left.
Inside, the ground-floor room on the left has a 16th-century cross-beamed ceiling made up of chamfered beams and joists with plain stops, along with a large open fireplace. A 19th-century staircase is present, and there may be timber-framed cross walls. The roof above the right-hand end has 19th-century purlins. The Court House is located within a large and complex moated manorial site.
