Description

Probably a pair of cottages, now combined into a single dwelling, dating to the late 17th century with a mid-to-late 19th century addition and later alterations. The original construction is timber framed, with rendered walls on a painted rubble plinth. A sandstone addition is present, using uncoursed grey sandstone with red brick detailing, and the roofs are covered in plain tiles. The north-east front has two framed bays facing the road, with a later addition extending to the south-east. The building is one storey and attic, and two storeys in height. The 17th century section on the right has two 20th century raking dormers with 2- and 3-light leaded metal casement windows, and integral brick corner stacks. The addition on the left features higher eaves and a brick ridge stack. The right-hand original section includes a central first-floor 2-light wooden casement, a ground-floor 20th century 2-light metal casement to the right, and a 20th century leaded half-glazed door with side-lights and a flat porch to the left. The addition has first-floor 20th century one-, 2- and 3-light metal casements, ground-floor 20th century 2- and 3-light metal casements, and evidence of a centrally blocked doorway. A boarded door is located at the rear of the original 17th century block, with a gabled porch. The interior of the 17th century section retains a collar and tie-beam end truss with queen struts, a central collar truss with V-struts, single purlins with wind braces, unchamfered beams and joists, and two 17th century corner fireplaces, one with an early 19th century surround. A likely 17th or 18th century staircase is also present, and the complete timber frame survives.
