Description
Cast iron railings and commemorative brass plates are located about 140 meters south-west of Boscobel House. The railings were erected in 1817 and are set on a stone plinth, forming a circular enclosure around the Royal Oak. Inside the enclosure are three commemorative brass plates, supported by cast iron brackets. The smallest and earliest plate, which is in Latin, dates to 1787. The two larger plates were added in 1875 and detail the history of the tree. The Royal Oak is believed to be a descendant of the tree where Charles II and his companion, William Careless, hid from Cromwell's troops in 1651.
