Description
The Gatehouse Cottage is a cottage that likely dates back to the 17th century. It features a rendered timber frame and a slate roof, consisting of two framed bays. There is an external brick stack on the west side and a rendered integral stack on the east. The cottage has one storey with a gable-lit attic. The south front includes a segmental-headed late 19th century wooden cross-window on the right and a probably early 20th century wooden casement on the left, flanking a pair of boarded doors, with the right door having a segmental head. The north front has a small square window located off-centre to the left.
Inside, there is a central collar and tie-beam truss, although the tie-beam has been cut through at a later date. The roof is supported by single purlins and windbraces. A central framed partition features wattle and daub panels, and the first floor rests on chamfered plates attached to the frame, which may be a later addition. The interior also includes chamfered beams with ogee stops, a chamfered jamb at the doorway in the cross-wall, a large open fireplace, and a small late 19th century grate located upstairs. A newel staircase is positioned next to the stack in the northeast corner.
