Description

Little Beckjay is a house dating from the 16th or 17th century, with later alterations. It features a timber frame with brick infill, rendered at the front, and has stone additions. The roof is covered with graded stone tiles and has a brick ridge stack. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of a four-bay range that runs east-west and faces south, with entrances at the west end and a south-projecting west wing.

The south front has two storeys and a gabled wing on the left. The fenestration is slightly irregular, with 20th-century glazing bar casements. There is a 20th-century door to the left in the re-entrant angle between the main range and the wing. The north front displays exposed timber framing, with a gabled wing on the right that has four square panels at the eaves, a slightly cambered tie beam, and two collars with vertical struts. The centre and first floor left feature 20th-century casements. The two right-hand bays of the main range have two small square panels between the first floor and the eaves, with casements in the ground floor centre and first floor left and right, and a door to the right. The two left-hand bays have a lean-to extension made of brick and stone at the front, also with a graded stone tile roof.

Inside, there are exposed timber-framed partition walls with oak stave infill panels, and chamfered and stopped ceiling beams throughout. The ground floor room in the south bay of the crosswing has early 18th-century bolection-moulded panelling with a cyma recta moulded cornice. The north bay of the wing contains an early 17th-century nekel staircase, featuring a landing balustrade with turned balusters.
