Description

Oriel House is a house located on Broad Street in Ludlow, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, with an earlier core. The exterior is roughcast, topped with a hipped plain tile roof that features a hipped gable over the central porch bay. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a six-window range that includes a 6/6 sash window in the protruding porch bay, flanked by pairs of 6/6 sashes. The eaves are moulded wood.

The entrance features a part-glazed panelled door set in a panelled case with a moulded architrave. This door is recessed within a stucco porch that has a moulded semi-circular arch on moulded springers, along with a flat hood and frieze supported by pilasters with Ionic capitals. To the left of the entrance, there is a 6/6 sash window above a plank door leading to the cellar, which is recessed under a cambered head and accessed by steps from the 18th-century wrought-iron gate and railings.

A wing to the left includes a 6/6 sash window above another similar window, while the return to Bell Lane features an ornate oriel window on the first floor, with round-headed plain sashes and wood modillion eaves supported by scrolled, fluted consoles. Below this oriel is a blocked opening. The building also has a fixed light with margin-glazing and coloured lights, a brick stack from the first floor, and a hipped roof with a brick ridge stack to the right. The 18th-century gable and parapet have moulded stone coping and a blocked circular opening from the original house, which is visible at the rear. There is a further two-storey wing with a two-window range of 3/6 sashes. To the right, steps lead to a recessed round-headed door with margin-glazing and coloured lights, which is topped by a flat hood on moulded pilasters. There is also a tripartite window arrangement of 2/2, 6/6, and 2/2 sashes under a segmental arch to the left.
