Description
This is a fragment of a wall located approximately 30 metres north of Leigh Hall Farmhouse. It is likely from the 14th or 15th century and is constructed from roughly coursed and dressed quartzite and limestone rubble, resting on a rough plinth. The wall stands about 2.5 metres high and measures 5 metres long, with a right-angled turn to the southwest. It is part of a wall that once surrounded the inner edge of a rectangular moated house platform, which measured approximately 80 by 30 metres. Besides this standing fragment, only the footings of the wall remain, including those of the gatehouse near the current causewayed entrance on the northwest side. The moat is well-preserved on three sides and is filled with water.
The site was abandoned in the late 1660s, possibly due to damage from the Civil War, after which the current Leigh Hall Farmhouse was constructed to replace it. Several stones from the previous buildings on the site have been reused in the boundary wall and farm buildings located to the southeast.
