Description

St Leonard's House is a late 18th-century house with a medieval fragment and a late 19th-century addition, situated in Ludlow. The house is constructed of brick and has a hipped plain tile roof, with a more recent composite tile roof section, as well as brick lateral and end stacks. The building possesses a central staircase and an L-shaped plan, with three storeys and a cellar. The front facade is symmetrical and features a three-window range. The upper floors contain tripartite 2/2: 6/6: 2/2 sash windows under gauged brick flat arches with stucco keyblocks, along with 1/1, 3/3, and 1/1 sash windows above. The eaves are dentilled brick, and there are gable dormers. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a fanlight, set within a panelled round-headed case, topped by a moulded flat hood on fluted pilasters. The right-hand returned side includes a tier of two 6/6 sashes and a two-light casement above, all under gauged brick flat arches with stucco keyblocks. The rear wing exhibits mullion and transom 2-light casements with a two-light casement above, again under gauged brick flat arches, alongside a 20th-century casement to the ground floor, set below a returned lintel. A brick tower, constructed around 1883, is located on the rear, enclosing a fragment of the Linney Gate. The rear elevation includes steps leading to the tower and a 20th-century glazed entrance door, along with a 3/3 sash window within a broad casing to the gable. The interior features 18th-century doors, panelling, and timber framing, and a cobbled floor.
