Description
This is a churchyard cross located about 5 meters south of the south porch of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. It dates from the 14th or 15th century and features a base with a shaft and head that were repaired in the early 20th century. The cross is made of sandstone and has an octagonal tapering shaft topped with a foliated cross head, which sits in a socket stone on a four-stepped square plinth. The bottom two steps of the plinth are very worn and are original, while the top two steps are replacements from the 20th century. Only the bottom meter of the shaft is original; the rest and the cross head were restored in the early 20th century. In the late 19th century, the original part of the shaft was used as a pedestal for a sundial. The upper edge of the socket stone is decorated with cable moulding and has faces at its corners. The cable moulding on the socket stone is similar to that found on the cross at the Church of St. Cuthbert in Donington.
