Description

The farmhouse and attached barn date from the mid to late 17th century, with significant remodelling in the mid-18th century, including raising the eaves and adding a connecting range to the barn. Later additions and alterations have also occurred.

The farmhouse is timber-framed, with painted brick infill to the rear and rendered brick to the front. The left gable end is of painted limestone rubble, and the roof is covered in graded slate. It is two storeys high, featuring a dentil eaves cornice. C19 casement windows are present, with a boarded door beneath a C19 gabled, trellised porch. The ground-floor windows to the left and right of the door are segmental-headed, while those on the first floor are directly below the eaves. External red brick stacks are located on the left and right. The rear displays exposed timber framing with square panels, three from the cill to the original wall plate, with one above the raising of the eaves. A section to the right of the original house forms part of both the house and a former cowhouse. The house section has a segmental-headed door to the left and segmental-headed casements to the right, with another casement directly below the eaves above the door. The cowhouse has a stable door to the left and an eaves hatch above a fixed-light window to the right. C19 lean-to additions are present to the rear.

The barn is a timber-frame structure with weatherboarding on an uncoursed limestone rubble plinth. The roof is covered in corrugated iron. The weatherboarding is vertical to the left and horizontal to the right, where it is largely concealed by painted rubble and a red brick lean-to. Stable doors are located to the left and centre, with an eaves hatch to the left. External lateral steps lead to the right gable end, which has a segmental-headed boarded door on the first floor.

The barn’s interior features a stone threshing floor in the third bay from the left. The roof, spanning four bays, has collar and tie beams to the first truss from the left and raking struts from the tie beam to the principal rafters to the third truss from the left. The second truss from the left is truncated above the tie beam, potentially indicating a reused cruck blade. A loft extends to the two bays on the left and the right bay. The interior of the house was not inspected during a resurvey in November 1986, but it is likely to be of interest.
