Description

The former bakehouse, now an outbuilding, is located approximately 10 metres southeast of Smethcote Manor. It dates from the 18th century and is constructed of red brick on a dressed red sandstone plinth, topped with a plain tile roof. The building is one storey high with a loft and features a dentil brick eaves cornice and an integral brick end stack positioned in front of the ridge to the right.

On the west front, there is a small two-light segmental-headed wooden-framed metal casement window on the left and a segmental-headed boarded door on the right. To the right, there is a lean-to from the 18th century (with no straight joint) that has two boarded doors on its return. The left-hand gable end has a partly blocked segmental-headed loft opening. At the rear, there is an introduced early 19th-century small-paned cast-iron window with intersecting tracery.

Inside, there is a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel, which is now blocked and has an inserted bread oven. The owner reported in December 1985 that there was formerly a washing copper as well. The large fireplace indicates that this building may have once served as a cottage. It is included for its group value.
