Description

Nos. 17 and 18 are a cottage that has been divided, dating from the mid- to late 17th century, with early and mid-20th century additions. The building is timber framed with painted brick nogging and is partly rendered. The front is underbuilt and extended in both painted and unpainted brick, topped with a plain tile roof. It has a baffle-entry plan consisting of two framed bays with additions. The framing features square panels, formerly three from the sole plate to the wall plate. The cottage is one storey with an attic, and there is a 20th century raking eaves dormer on the right, which has a three-light metal casement window. The front has two windows with 20th century three-light wooden casements flanking a central half-glazed door. To the right is an early 20th century addition that is not of special interest, while to the left and at the rear are late 20th century one-storey brick additions. Inside the timber framed section, the left-hand ground-floor room features a chamfered spine beam and plain joists, along with evidence of a large old fireplace. There is a 17th century winder staircase at the rear of the stack, and the roof has 17th century trusses and purlins. Despite the later additions, this building is noted for the survival of its timber frame and internal features.
