Description

This barn, likely built in the mid to late 18th century, is located approximately 20 meters northeast of Sutton Farmhouse. It was remodeled in the early 19th century, incorporating architectural fragments that were probably sourced from other locations, with some minor later alterations. The structure is made of uncoursed limestone rubble with alternating boulder quoins and features a hipped roof covered with graded slate.

Originally, the barn was a small rectangular agricultural building that underwent re-roofing and re-fenestration in the early 19th century, during which it was also extended on both sides. The barn has two levels. The main range includes a 19th-century casement window positioned directly below the eaves on the right, and reused ogee-headed windows with Y-tracery (the heads of which are blind) to the left and right of a central blind doorway that also features Y-tracery in its pointed tympanum. Access is provided through a reused stone pilastered doorcase with a bracketed hood located on the right wall.

To the left, there is an extension that has a 19th-century casement window directly below the eaves and a segmental-headed vehicle entrance below it. On the right side, there is a set-back addition with a 19th-century casement window immediately below the eaves and a stable door directly below it.

Attached to the front right corner of the main range is a wall, likely built in the early 19th century, made of uncoursed limestone rubble with stone coping that ramps up to the center over a flat-headed arch featuring a large stone lintel. The date of the reused windows and doors is uncertain but is likely from the late 17th or early 18th century. Sutton Farmhouse itself is not included in this listing.
