Description

The Malt House, now a house, is a 17th-century farmhouse with later alterations. It is constructed of painted timber frame with painted rendered infill panels, alongside coursed and stone rubble. The roof is plain-tiled, with the extension wing’s gable having an ashlar cope. There are two large projecting tile-stepped stacks, one at the gable-end and one at the eaves, both with brick shafts. A further integral gable-end stack also has a brick shaft. The building has a 3-bay rectangular plan, running parallel to the street, with a side extension wing.

On the front, the extension wing has a gable end to the left, featuring a 2-light multi-pane casement window over a 20th-century casement window. The main range has a 2-light leaded casement window above the entrance door, which is covered by a tiled lean-to porch. The right return gable has a 2-window range of 2-light cross-casements with leaded lights to each floor. The left side features the side wall of the extension wing, covered by a lean-to extension with a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer. The main range’s gable-end displays arch-braced square framing with a gable truss consisting of a cambered tie beam, vertical struts, collar, and twin raking struts. This is partially covered by a stone stack to the left and a 20th-century lean-to extension below. The rear of the building has a central projecting stone stack, a tiled gabled stone enclosed porch to the right, a wood mullion and transom window with leaded lights to the far right, and a leaded casement to the left. The interior was not inspected during listing.
