Description

The gateway and flanking walls to Hodnet Hall, located approximately 18 metres to the south-west of the Church of Saint Luke, were constructed in 1887, likely by architect Anthony Salvin. They are made of grey sandstone ashlar and are designed in the Neo-Jacobean style.

On the east side, the gateway features flanking buttresses with chamfered offsets and reveals, along with banded rustication that returns as voussoirs. It has a raised keystone adorned with Ionic volutes and an inscription that reads "ESPERANCE / EN DIEU / 1954," with earlier lettering just visible beneath that states "? / CORVOS / 1887." The frieze includes raised rectangular panels, and there is an open triangular pediment supported by brackets, featuring a central globe finial in the tympanum. A carved family crest is present on the keystone at the rear.

The flanking walls are made of tooled ashlar, featuring ramped chamfered copings and square end piers topped with moulded caps and globe finials. The design of the gateway is reminiscent of another gateway dated 1631 and 1954 in Hodnet Park. Hodnet was historically the seat of the Vernons, and the current building, which is not included in this listing, dates from 1870.
