Description

The buildings at 44 and 45 High Street date primarily from the early 19th century, although the core of the structure is 17th century and was originally a malthouse. The front is painted brick, with remnants of the earlier timber frame visible in the rear gable. The building is two storeys high and has seven windows; three have glazing bars, and one is set within an opening previously used for a hoist associated with the malthouse. A gabled sack hoist projects above the eaves. There is a plain doorway and a wood doorcase with a small cornice hood. The eaves are dentilled, and the roof is covered in old tiles. Exposed ceiling beams are present within the building. The buildings at 44 and 45, along with numbers 40 to 45 (inclusive), the Fox Hotel, and numbers 47 to 49 (inclusive), form a group.
