Description
The lychgate, located approximately 25 metres north of the Church of St. George, dates back to 1723 according to churchwardens' accounts. It was dismantled in 1841, re-erected around 1881, and restored in 1956. The structure features a timber frame set on low coursed limestone rubble walls, topped with a graded stone slate roof that has gables on all sides, adorned with moulded barge boards and finials from circa 1881. The lychgate has a square plan with close studded sides that include a central rail, blocked below and open above. It has large curved arch-braces at the entrances on the north and south sides, and trusses in the gables with vertical struts supporting a collar and quatre-foiled panels. A central pair of wooden gates from circa 1881 completes the design. After its dismantling, the lychgate was temporarily re-erected at the gateway to Handcauseway before being returned to its original location around 1881. Although it was restored in 1956, it is recognized as a faithful copy and holds group value.
