Description
The building adjacent to The Old School House in Shrewsbury is a former office, originally part of Shrewsbury School. It dates back to the 16th century but was extensively rebuilt in 1818, likely by E and JH Haycock. The structure is made of painted brick with a plain tiled roof and retains some internal timber-framing. It stands two stories high with an attic and features three bays, including a prominent gable on the left. The design is in the Neo-Tudor style, characterized by round-arched mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. The gable has a two-window range and a small doorway to the left, while the main entrance is to the right, set in a stone embattled porch with a four-centred archway and the Salop arms above. The porch also contains several antique sculptural fragments. A canted bay window with an embattled parapet is located in the center of the long range, with mullioned windows of one and two lights above it. There are two coped gabled dormers featuring two-light casement windows. Inside, the hallway and a rear ground-floor room include 17th-century wall-panelling, which is likely not in its original location, and the rear room's panelling is carved with the names of former pupils from 1843 to 1881. Some timber-framing has also been revealed internally.
