Description

The stables, outbuildings, and attached walls at Sibdon Castle date from the early 18th century. They are constructed of ashlar sandstone and feature a plain tile roof with gables at both the front and rear. The building is L-shaped in plan and consists of a single storey with an attic.

On the exterior, there are lattice leaded cross-windows in the gables and an inserted gable dormer with a 2-light leaded casement located at the left center. The central entrance has double plank doors beneath a moulded semi-circular arch and gable topped with a ball finial. This entrance is flanked by additional double doors under 4-centred arches on panelled pilasters. The doors are set in bolection-moulded stone doorcases, and there are lattice-leaded lights under segmental arches. To the extreme right, there is a lattice-glazed cross-window, and to the extreme left, double plank doors are set beneath an ashlar segmental arch.

The left side of the building, facing east, has a four-window range with cross-casement windows featuring lattice glazing, all within moulded architraves with keyblocks under cambered heads. The gable has shouldered moulded coping and a ball finial above the advanced central bay, along with a parapet that has moulded coping. A central entrance, now blocked, is located under a moulded stone flat hood supported by scrolled consoles and panelled pilasters, flanked by similar windows.

Inside, the stables feature stop-chamfered ceiling beams, stable fittings, and a dog-leg staircase. To the north, there is an attached wall from the 18th century, which has a brick face over rubble, with brick and ashlar pilasters and castellation, as well as an ashlar band. A 19th-century six-panel door with a pointed head is set under a pointed arch, and the wall is approximately 90 meters long and 3-4 meters high, linking to the Lodge.
