Description
The Old Railway Station, formerly the headquarters of the Cambrian Railway Company, is a railway station built around 1865 that has been converted into a shop. It features red brick construction on a moulded stone plinth, with painted stone dressings and chamfered angle quoins. The building has a hipped slate roof with four rendered ridge stacks and stands two storeys high.
The eaves cornice is decorated with brackets, rosettes, and emblems that alternate with each bracket. The entrance side has a window arrangement of five, four, four, four, and five, with the second sets from the left and right forming projecting bays. The round-headed windows are 8-paned sashes with projecting keystones and moulded cills. Each ground-floor window has a moulded stone rectangular panel above, with a square panel over the triple windows at the outer ends of the left and right bays. The central section has a corrugated iron lean-to roof supported on cast-iron brackets, with half-glazed doors at the entrance.
On the platform side, the details mirror those of the entrance side, featuring 19 bays and a full-height ashlar-faced four-window canted bay at the centre. There are 20th-century additions to the front at the right-hand end and in the angle with the left projecting bay, which are not of special architectural interest.
