Description
The Corbet memorial is located approximately 15 metres to the south-west of the Church of Saint Bartholomew in Moreton Corbet. This churchyard memorial features a sculpture dated 1904 and is signed by John H. M. Furse, who was born in 1860. The memorial consists of a marble pedestal with a bronze sculpture on top. The pedestal has a moulded plinth, a moulded cornice, and a cap adorned with acanthus leaves at the corners. The figure of Mercury is inscribed with "I.H.M. FURSE 1904."
On the front of the pedestal, there is a carved oak festoon along with an elephant and castle and a squirrel, with the inscription "VIRTUTIS LAUS AG/TIO/DUM/SPIRO/SPERO." The rear features a carved swag and a raven, inscribed with "DEUS PASCIT CORVOS." The sides of the pedestal are decorated with carved wreaths. The left-hand side bears the inscription "To the/dear memory of/Vincent Stewart/Corbet/B. January 27 1890/D. At Eton College/October 17 1903," and it also commemorates Walter Orlando Corbet, who died in 1910, and Roland James Corbet, who died in 1915. Vincent Corbet passed away from appendicitis. This memorial is a rare example of a sculpture in the metropolitan Post-Gilbert style found in a country churchyard.
