Description
Cloverley is a house, originally two houses, built in the late 18th century. It features a combination of brick and stone rubble with painted render, topped by plain-tile roofs. The left-hand house has a central brick ridge stack, while the right-hand house has an integral gable-end stack.
The exterior consists of two storeys, with the left-hand house being lower. The front of the left-hand house includes two 2-light casements with brick segmental arched openings at the ground floor and a central door. On the first floor, there are two additional 2-light casements. The right-hand house has two 2-light casements on the first floor, while the ground floor features a 20th-century glazed door to the left and a 2-light casement to the right, both under brick segmental arched openings.
At the rear, the higher house is built of rubble stone, while the lower house is brick, with a single casement at the first-floor level and a painted rendered gable end.
Inside, the house is reputed to have unhewn timber roof trusses. It was once the home of Hesba Stretton, the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, who lived from 1832 to 1911 and wrote works such as "Jessica's First Prayer" and "Children of Cloverley."
