Description
The Whitchurch Heritage Centre, originally a Wesleyan chapel and later a post office, was built in 1810 and underwent internal alterations in the 20th century. The building features a rendered or painted grey sandstone ashlar exterior and has a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys tall.
Architecturally, the centre has a plinth and a rusticated ground floor, with floor bands and a Giant Tuscan order of pilasters that support a frieze, moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The facade includes a central steep one-bay pediment and a circular cowling on the roof. The building is arranged in a 1:1:1 bay pattern with a central break. The outer first-floor windows are round-arched glazing-bar sashes with plain architraves and impost blocks, while the central first-floor Venetian window also has a plain architrave and impost blocks. The ground floor features elliptical arched windows, likely altered in the 20th century, with margin lights and three recessed panels below, along with moulded imposts and voussoirs. A central pair of doors, each with three raised and fielded panels, is topped by a three-part elliptical-arched fanlight and a wooden doorcase with Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. The return fronts have five bays to the left and three bays to the right, each with a plinth, floor band, and round-arched glazing-bar sashes. The interior has been altered in the 20th century.
This chapel was replaced in 1879 by Saint John's Methodist Church located on Saint John's Street.
