Description
Harton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a painted close-studded timber frame with painted rendered infill panels, along with sections made of stone and brick. It has 20th-century wood casements throughout and plain-tile roofs. A central spurred four-shaft brick stack is located at the ridge of the main range, with two eaves stacks at the cross wing—one made of coursed rubble with a brick upper shaft and the other entirely of brick. The farmhouse has a T-shaped plan, with the main range and cross wing positioned parallel to the street.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic. The front displays a projecting gable from the cross wing on the left, featuring a cambered tie beam with two straight tension braces on each floor. Above the collar of the gable truss, there is decorative framing with three curved braces per square panel, and close-studding below. The main range to the right has square framing, which is covered on the right by a later lean-to extension.
On the side wall of the cross wing, there are two projecting stacks and full-height close studding with tension braces on each storey at both ends. The rear of the building shows that the cross wing gable has been rebuilt in brick on the right, with casements on each storey. The main range on the left is also covered by a later lean-to extension. The end gable of the main range has framing that has been underbuilt in late 19th-century brick, with only the truss of the straight tie beam, vertical struts, and collar remaining. There are later lean-to extensions on each side. The interior has not been inspected.
