Description

Two adjoining barns, located about 75 meters west-northwest of the farm at Walford College of Agriculture, date from the mid to late 17th century. They were extended in the 18th century and remodeled and extended again in the late 19th century. The barns are timber-framed, with parts infilled and re-clad in brick, and some areas faced in weatherboarding. They feature slate roofs with gabled ends and are arranged in an L-shape.

The long range runs on a north-south axis, with a four-bay 17th-century timber-framed barn at the north end, which was extended to the south in brick during the late 19th century. At right angles to the north end of the west side is a three-bay 17th-century timber-framed barn oriented east-west, which was extended by three bays in the 18th century.

On the exterior, the east barn along the north-south axis has exposed timber-framing with brick infilling on its east side, while the top panels are weatherboarded. The north end features brickwork with a cart entrance and a loft door above. The west side is weatherboarded timber-frame, adjoining the weatherboarded timber-framed barn on the east-west axis, which has a cart entrance and a brick outshut on the right (northwest) at the angle of the barn. The late 19th-century brick extension at the south end of the north-south axis barn includes a four-bay cartshed with segmental brick arches that have been infilled with windows.

Inside, the four-bay barn on the north-south axis has large straight tension-braces, wall-posts with cut jowls that support tie-beams with queen-struts leading to cambered collars, and trenched and threaded purlins. The eastern three bays of the east-west axis barn feature similar trusses but with roughly jowled posts, while its three-bay west extension has queen-post trusses. The common rafters were replaced in the late 19th or 20th century.
