Description
The Gwilliam Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 24 metres north of the north aisle of the Church of St George in Clun. It dates from around 1819 and was created by J. Davies of Clun. The tomb is made of sandstone ashlar and features a moulded plinth, sunken side panels that flank cable-fluted pilaster strips, raised end panels, shaped quadrant corner balusters, and a moulded cornice at the chamfered top. It commemorates Thomas Gwilliam, who died in 1819. The memorial showcases some fine early 19th-century carved lettering and is notable for being signed. This type of tomb is relatively rare in the churchyard, with only two or three similar examples in the area, including the Brown and Edwards memorials.
