Description

The Bull and Dog Public House is a house that has been converted into an inn. It dates from the mid-17th century and was restored and extended in 1910, with further additions and alterations made later. The building is timber framed with rendered infill and has a slate roof. It originally had a baffle-entry plan consisting of three framed bays, with the eaves raised, and has been significantly extended in the early and late 20th century.

The framing has been largely renewed, featuring rectangular panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall-plate in the 17th-century part and planted framing in the early 20th-century additions. The early 20th-century leaded casements include two on the left and one on the right of the porch, with the central window slightly projecting and supported by carved brackets. There are three gabled eaves dormers with quatrefoil decoration and pointed finials, likely added in 1910.

The gabled porch, which features barleysugar balusters and is probably from the 17th century, has been considerably restored in 1910 and includes a 20th-century ledged door. There is a red brick ridge stack immediately to the right and an external end stack to the left. A brass plate on the outer lintel of the porch bears an inscription that records the repair of the inn in 1910, although it is now largely illegible.

Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered in the late 20th century, with a central rebuilt stack, but it retains some exposed timber frame elements along with chamfered beams and joists. The prominent additions to the rear and right are not of special architectural interest.
