Description
Red Hall Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, that likely dates back to the 17th century. It was partly remodeled in the mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble and has a machine tile roof. It features a two-cell plan and is one storey high with an attic.
On the front, there are mid-19th century cast-iron latticed casements with segmental brick heads on either side of a segmental-headed boarded door. Above this door, there are gabled eaves dormers, also with latticed casements. The integral end stacks have 19th century red brick tops with moulded capping. The cottage has 19th century double-purlin ends, with earlier purlin ends directly above and below. There is a wooden lintel that may be related to a former doorway beneath the west end stack at the rear.
The interior was not accessible during the last survey in July 1986, but it was noted to have deep-chamfered spine beams in two ground-floor rooms, with straight-cut stops and flat heavy joists. The cottage forms a roadside group with a barn to the southeast, which adds to its group value.
