Description

This is a late 16th-century timber-framed shop and former public house, originally a dwelling, located on the north-west side of The Square in Shrewsbury. The building is three storeys high and originally had a three-window front. The ground floor has been renewed with brick nogging, featuring a central and outer doorway. A round-arched window is present on the left-hand side of the shop, and an oriel bay window is located on the public house side. The upper storeys are each jettied out on a moulded bressumer and framed in small panels. Decorative features include ogee tension bracing and quatrefoil panelling in the upper storey. The vertical timber members have raised twisted shaft decoration and quatrefoil emblems. There are three oriel windows with mullions, transoms, and leaded lights on each floor, supported by moulded corbel brackets. Enriched bargeboards are above the gables of the upper windows. Two rear wall stacks are present.
