Description
Brook House is a villa built in the early 19th century and has been altered since its construction. It is made of brick in Flemish bond and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys tall with a basement and has an L-shaped plan that adjoins the rear of another property on Market Place.
The west-facing garden front features a symmetrical arrangement of two bays on the left that are set back and include a later verandah supported by decorative cast-iron stanchions and a frieze. Within the verandah, there is a part-glazed and panelled door framed by a wooden doorcase with consoles and a cornice. To the left of the door, a tripartite sash window with glazing bars is set beneath a rubbed-brick semi-circular arch that rises above the roof of the verandah. Above this, there is a 6/3-pane sash window with a projecting sill and a cambered arch, along with inserted casements to the right. The two bays on the right are set forward and feature large 12-pane sashes in reeded surrounds with awnings. The 12-pane sashes above also have rubbed-brick cambered arches. The shallow-pitched hipped roofs have dentilled eaves and tall brick stacks.
On the left return, there are projecting sills and rubbed-brick cambered arches over one 12-pane sash and three 6/3-pane sashes, along with some blind windows and cellar steps on the left. The right return has a margin-glazed door and a panelled door leading to the basement. The interior was not inspected, and the ground floor windows were boarded up at the time of the survey.
