Description

Grafton Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse, dating to the mid- to late 17th century. It was significantly remodelled and extended in the late 18th century, with further additions and alterations made later. The original timber frame is now largely concealed by render and red brick cladding, with red brick used for later additions. The roofs are covered in concrete tiles. The original house comprised two framed bays, with a central gabled range that was brick-clad on its front elevation during the late 18th-century remodelling. At this time, a short range was added to the left, and a similar double-span extension to the right. The 18th-century additions feature dentilled eaves cornices. The windows have an irregular arrangement, with early and late 20th-century casements featuring segmental heads. One window is found to the first floor of the gable, with two paired windows on the ground floor. The right addition has one window to each floor, alongside an inserted small window above a late 20th-century gabled brick porch. The left addition features one blind segmental-headed window on each floor, with glazing bars painted in imitation. A brick end stack is integrated into the left side of the house, and a prominent stack is visible on the roof slope of the right rear range. Inside, the ground floor retains chamfered spine beams with heavy joists. The 17th-century section includes several plank doors and an oak staircase with a moulded handrail, leading from the first floor to the attic. The roof is a double-purlin construction in two bays, featuring a central king-strut truss with a collar and tie beam, and V-struts from the collar visible in the front gable of the attic.
