Description
The former Monkmoor School is a senior open-air school built in 1928-30. It is constructed of red brick and half-timbering with a plain tile roof and tall brick stacks, and incorporates a blue brick plinth. The building has a double courtyard plan arranged around a central assembly hall. The ground floor is brick with herringbone nogging, while the upper floors are timber-framed with plaster infill.
The entrance front features a recessed gabled centre with a set-back ground floor, incorporating a central foundation plaque flanked by single doors. The upper floor has a large three-light glazing bar window supported on iron columns. Projecting gabled pavilions flank the entrance, each with an ashlar Tudor arched doorway and two glazing bar windows above. Upper gables incorporate tripartite glazing bar windows. Classroom wings feature an open wooden arcade with set-back full-height glazing bar windows, and the upper floors have four tall dormer windows with two-light glazing bar casements on each side. Similar end pavilions have Tudor ashlar doorways and two glazing bar windows. Side wings feature very tall through-eaves dormer windows with gables and glazing bars. The inner courtyard facades show wooden arcades, full-height glazing bar windows, and gabled dormer windows above. The central Assembly Hall has four tall through-eaves dormer windows with gables and glazing bars, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
The school is listed as a well-preserved example of its type, demonstrating good quality design.
