Description

The War Memorial in Ruyton XI Towns was built in 1920 and designed by Stanley Griffiths. It is made of sandstone and takes the form of a cave set within a red sandstone cliff. Inside the cave, there is a carved stone cross at the back, flanked by stone benches on either side. On the left bench, there is a rectangular stone plaque featuring the county and borough coat of arms, which honors those who died in the Great War. The inscription reads "1914-19 The Great War in memory of" followed by a list of 17 names. Below this, it states "We will remember them/This present life is not the end/Also in honour of the 130 other men who served from Ruyton-XI-Towns." Beneath this plaque, a smaller stone plaque commemorates five men who were killed in World War II. Above the entrance to the cave, the dates "1914 - 1919" are carved, with "1939" and "1945" inscribed in a recessed rectangle on the left and right sides, respectively. The memorial was unveiled in October 1920 by General Kenyon, accompanied by buglers from the King's Shropshire Light Infantry playing the Last Post.
