Description
Wain House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century. The building features a timber frame with painted brick nogging, and it has been refronted and extended in red brick, topped with a plain tile roof. The framing consists of small square panels, three from the sole plate to the wall plate, and small rectangular panels, four from the sole plate to the wall plate.
The structure includes a hall range of two framed bays, with a one-bay wing at the rear and a projecting gabled cross wing to the east. It has one storey and an attic, while the cross wing has two storeys and an attic. The south front features a central brick ridge stack behind the ridge and another central brick ridge stack on the cross wing. There are two large gabled eaves dormers with 2 x 2-light 20th-century metal casements, and three ground-floor windows: two and three-light 19th-century wooden casements with straight-sided arched heads. There is a 20th-century door off-centre to the left with a 20th-century gabled porch, and a boarded door to the far left.
The left-hand gable end displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts, along with a 20th-century two-light casement. A 20th-century lean-to garage is attached to the left. The right-hand cross wing features small 19th-century straight-sided arched attic casements, a pair of first-floor 20th-century two-light metal casements, and a ground-floor 19th-century three-light wooden casement with a straight-sided arched head. There is a 20th-century half-glazed door in the left-hand return with a 20th-century lean-to porch in the angle, and a 19th-century addition adjoining to the right, which includes a gabled semi-dormer and a ground-floor three-light wooden casement. Much of the timber framing is visible at the rear. The cross wing has a tie-beam truss with two collars and two pairs of queen struts, while a small gabled wing at the rear of the hall range has a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. The interior has not been inspected.
