Description

Stokesay Court is a mansion built around 1889 by Thomas Harris. It is constructed of coursed dressed sandstone with a plain tile roof and features various rubble and ashlar stacks with moulded caps. The building is E-shaped on plan, with a wing at the right rear.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a five-window range. The central feature is a mullion and transom oriel window with a moulded underhang, situated in an ornate ashlar porch-bay beneath an elaborate shaped gable. This is flanked by five-light mullion and transom windows and advanced canted two-tier bays, which also have mullion and transom windows under parapets with openwork balustrades and enriched shaped gables. A cornice runs along the top.

The porch has a moulded arch with keystones, flanked by attached Ionic columns. There are steps leading to a part-glazed panelled door set in a moulded case. Inside the porch, the ceiling is vaulted with moulded ribs and a cornice, and it is flanked by mullion and transom windows featuring coloured clerestory lights. A moulded band runs along the plinth, and lead rainwater goods are present.

On the left side, there is a semi-circular bay window and advanced bays under shaped gables with attic lights. The right side features mullion and transom windows, a bay window on the ground floor, a returned parapet with a balustrade, and an advanced bay under a shaped gable with an attic light. There are bands, cross-windows, and additional mullion and transom windows on the ground floor.

At the rear, the building displays mullion windows, shaped gables, a bellcote, and a tower with a castellated parapet, along with a courtyard range that has arcade openings.

Inside, the mansion features panelling with coved pilasters, a gallery, and an open-well staircase.
