Description

The Cottage, formerly known as Castle House, is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill panels and stone rubble, topped by a plain-tile roof. There is an integral brick end stack and a projecting stepped stone eaves stack with a diagonally-set brick shaft. The building has a T-shaped plan, likely incorporating an old stone longhouse range and a timber-framed two-bay cross wing.

The exterior is a single storey with an attic. The front displays a stone range on the left, which includes a boarded entrance door with a flat canopy and a two-light casement window. Above, there is a 19th-century brick dormer with another two-light casement. To the right is the gable end of the cross wing, characterized by large square framing three panels high, a single large tension brace, jowled posts, and a tie beam interrupted by a two-light casement and collar.

On the return side of the cross wing, the irregular square framing is three panels high, partially obscured by a stone stack to the right and a ground-floor two-light casement to the left. At the rear, the cross wing gable end to the left features jowled posts filled with stone rubble and a rendered gable head, with a single trenched-purlin roof visible. There is a 20th-century attic casement and a two-light casement at ground level. The rear of the stone range is obscured by a single-storey hipped and tiled lean-to extension that has a plain boarded door and a four-light casement. The gable of the stone range to the east is covered by a single-storey tile-roofed agricultural storage range, which is believed to form part of a longhouse-type plan. The interior has not been inspected.
