Description

This is a barn dated 1740 with minor later alterations, located in Fron, Selattyn and Gobowen. It is timber framed with red brick infill set on a high uncoursed limestone rubble plinth that continues to the gable ends and back wall, topped with a graded slate roof. The barn has two levels and features square-headed doorways: one on the left, two in the center, and one on the right. There are rectangular openings on the first floor at the gable ends and narrow rectangular air vents on the back wall. The framing consists of two square panels above the girding beam. Inside, the framing is intact with bay divisions and square and rectangular panels, four of which extend from the cill to the tie beam. The loft in the two right bays and the left bay is supported by chamfered cross beams with heavy joists; the floorboards were removed during a resurvey in May 1986. The barn has a double-purlin roof in four bays with three queen-strut trusses that include several reused timbers. The date "1740" is inscribed in both Roman and Arabic numerals on the tie beam between the second and third bays from the left. The remains of the formerly associated farmhouse, known as The Postings, are located immediately to the north-west, although they are not included in this listing. The barn is a prominent feature in the landscape.
