Description

Smithy Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble, with a graded slate roof featuring coped verges on the left side and an integral end stack with a dripstone. The cottage originally comprised two rooms, with an end stack located behind the entrance to the gable end. It is two storeys in height. Mid-19th century casement windows are positioned one to the left of centre on the ground floor and one on each floor to the right. A wide, sloping buttress is present on the left side, along with an infilled window opening. A boarded door is located in the left gable end, and a secondary internal end stack is visible in the roof slope on the right. A 19th-century rubblestone lean-to extends to the rear on the right, and a further addition is set back to the left. Internally, the cottage reveals deep-chamfered spine beams and heavy joists on the ground floor, alongside a timber-framed cross wall and visible wall posts beneath the wallpaper. A large inglenook fireplace with a 19th-century mantel-shelf is found in the left room, while the right room features a Victorian cast-iron grate. The original plan form resembles examples illustrated in P. Smith's "Houses of the Welsh Countryside."
