Description

The Craven Arms Hotel is a coaching inn, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed of brick, with rendered areas, and has a hipped Welsh slate roof punctuated by two dentilled brick stacks at the rear. The main front elevation is two storeys high, with a three-window range. The windows are 6/6 sashes with shutters and sill bands, set within rendered bays framed by brick pilasters with stone bands and carved capitals. An ashlar band runs along the eaves. The central entrance features panelled double doors with lattice glazing, surmounted by a painted fanlight with glazing bars. Above the doors is a wooden open porch with a modillioned hood and entablature featuring triglyphs and guttae, supported by Roman Doric columns. Flanking the entrance are matching sashes. The left returned side has four similar sashes set under gauged brick flat arches, with an ashlar band to the eaves. The right returned side also exhibits similar sashes, with a returned band. A later wing extends to the rear on the right, characterised by a hipped Welsh slate roof, brick stacks, and plain sashes under gauged brick flat arches. This wing’s pilasters and the returned side feature tripartite windows with 1/1, 3/3, 1/1 sashes under segmental arches, along with additional 3/3 sashes. There’s a stone-lined eaves detail. A panelled door with side lights is set under a moulded wooden hood supported by scrolled brackets. To the left of this door is a 6/6 sash, and to the right, a late 19th-century lean-to with 2/2 sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
