Description
The Craven Arms is a late 16th to early 17th century house located in Newton. The structure is timber-framed and plaster over a sandstone rubble ground floor, with a 19th-century plain tile roof and a prominent rubble external stack featuring a brick superstructure and a chimney on the left-hand side. The front elevation has two storeys and a single window range; a late 19th-century cross-window with a casement is topped by a simple hood, and is set beneath a moulded bressumer resting on simple scrolled consoles to the gable. An entrance on the right leads to a 19th-century plank door, sheltered by a 20th-century porch. To the left of the entrance is a 19th-century four-light casement in a moulded frame. The left-hand returned side features weatherboarding and a rubble lean-to with a plain tile roof. The rear elevation consists of sandstone rubble with a later panel to the right, a 19th-century two-light casement in an altered opening, and plaster with a painted timber frame to the gable. Further rear windows include a two-light casement and a single-light casement to the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
