Description
This building is a barn and stables located about 25 yards north of Firs Farmhouse. It likely dates from the 18th century and was enlarged and altered in the 19th century. The structure is built of rubble with brick dressings and has stone slate roofs. It features eight bays, with the right section having been extended forward in the 19th century.
The left part has four entrances on the left side, two square windows in the center, and a large double entrance on the right side. The right part is one and a half storeys high and includes two segmental-headed 19th-century windows with 20th-century shutters and brick heads. There are also two loft doorways on the first floor: one above the door between the ground floor windows and another to the right above the cart access doors.
Inside, the left part has trusses with heavy ties and collars joined by vertical struts, except for the extreme left truss which has a kingpost. The three right-hand bays in the enlarged stables feature 19th-century machine-cut trusses. The left part contains cattle pens, while the right part has three loose boxes. This building is included for its group value with Firs Farmhouse.
