Description

Caerswall Farmhouse is likely late 17th century, possibly with earlier origins and later alterations. The farmhouse is timber-framed and faced with sandstone rubble, finished in roughcast. It has stone stacks to the left and rear sides, and two brick ridge stacks, one to the right of centre and one to the right end. The roof is slate-covered. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with the main range aligned east/west and a wing projecting southwards at the west end. It is two storeys high, with a 1:4 window arrangement. The windows are regularly spaced 2-pane casements with segmental heads on the ground floor, and there is a central early 20th-century porch. Inside, some first-floor panelling dates to the 17th century, and there are collar trusses with V-struts. A blocked, chamfered, segmentally-headed opening is found at the top of the main staircase. The principal room to the left of the porch has beams with run-out stop chamfers. The ground-floor ceiling beams of the later cross-wing have plain deep chamfers. Moulded beams, probably re-used, are found in the bay forming the junction of the two ranges near the secondary staircase, and may alternatively represent the remains of a solar to the main range.
