Description

This is an 18th-century dwelling with later alterations, constructed from stone with rough render and a slate roof, and featuring a brick chimneystack. The building is situated on a hill leading from the market square, oriented north-south along the road. It comprises a rectangular main range with extensions to the rear.

The two-storey, three-bay principal elevation is asymmetrical. It features two sash windows on each storey, varying in size and not aligned vertically or horizontally. A small casement window is located below the eaves on the left side. The top three windows are set in plain reveals and interrupt the dentiled cornice. The main front door, positioned off-centre to the right, is approached by three stone steps. It is a fielded panel door with two lights at the top, housed within a simple moulded doorcase and sheltered by a pitched projecting hood. A second door, set in a plain reveal on the far left, is half a storey lower due to the hillside. The roof is hipped at the south end, with a ridge stack located to the right of centre.

The interior has not been inspected.

Historical maps suggest that No. 12 Sherford Street was originally built as a single dwelling, later subdivided. There has been historic replacement and alteration of windows, with openings enlarged, added, and repositioned. Previously, buildings stood adjacent to this property, which are now absent.

The building is designated at Grade II for its historical significance, dating before the 1840 threshold. Its evolving exterior demonstrates a common building history within Bromyard, and it retains its original footprint with a substantially intact historic structure. It also contributes positively to the street scene and possesses group value alongside other listed buildings in the area.
