Description
Lower Townend is a house that dates from the 16th or 17th century and is a fragment of a larger building, incorporating a 15th-century truss from an earlier structure, with some minor additions from the 20th century. The house is timber-framed with rendered infill and some painted brick infill, featuring a sandstone plinth and stack with brick shafts, and has a tiled roof.
The building consists of two framed bays aligned east to west, with the entrance located on the south face. There is a 20th-century addition to the east gable end and a large axial stack toward the west end. It is a single storey with an attic; the north front has a large gabled dormer with a three-light casement window, a two-light window on the ground floor, and a single light in a small projection to the left. The stack features three conjoined star-plan shafts.
The framing includes irregular three square panels with a large swept brace from the sill to the central main post. Inside, there is a central upper cruck truss, which may be a full cruck although the lower section is not visible, with cusped struts supporting the collar. The ground floor has a large open fireplace with a moulded surround, and there are fragments of plastered decoration in the upper room.
