Description
The Townend, formerly known as Upper Townend Farmhouse, is a farmhouse dating from around 1600, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill, a sandstone plinth, and later additions in both brick and sandstone. The roof is tiled and from the 20th century, with a later brick chimney stack.
The building has three framed bays oriented south-west to north-east and faces south-east. It includes a north-east gable end stack and a central entrance. At the rear, there is a later parallel range with an additional lean-to. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the south-east front displaying three casement windows. There are three-light windows on either side of a central two-light window, and similar three-light windows flank a large contemporary gabled porch. This porch features baluster-shaped pilasters, scrolled brackets, and a moulded lintel, leading to a ledged door. The framing of the building is largely intact, consisting of four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with angle bracing at the wall-plate.
