Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church that dates from the late 12th century, with a 13th-century bellcote, a 15th-century south porch, and alterations to the chancel roof from the 17th century. It underwent restorations in 1909 and 1925. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble, featuring a timber-framed porch and a Welsh slate roof. It consists of a continuous nave and chancel, with a south porch and a west end of the nave that has been thickened to support the bellcote.

The nave includes two renewed trefoil-headed lights to the right of the restored 15th-century south porch, with curved braces to the tie beam and struts above, and close studding to the returns. There is an inner 12th-century roll moulded semicircular-headed doorway. The north wall has three renewed trefoil-headed lights and a blocked north doorway that was formerly segmental-headed, along with a bellcote at the west end. Below the gable, there are two pointed arched heads with a label.

In the chancel, there is a 12th-century semicircular-headed light on the south side and a similar window on the north side. The east window features three stepped and plain pointed-arched lights with a label.

Inside, the nave has a four-bay layout with a ceiled roof, tie-beam trusses with inclined struts, and a 17th-century two-bay chancel roof that includes two arch-braced trusses with decorative members and central pendants. A re-used north main post with vine ornament likely formed part of the rood. The font is a tall, oddly shaped cylindrical bowl with a round stem on a moulded base, with the base and bowl possibly made from re-used Roman material.
