Description

This group of five monuments is located about 8 yards south and south-east of the vestry of the Church of St Mary in Tretire with Michaelchurch.

The first monument is a chest tomb for Thomas Sternhold, who died in 1796. It is made of finely cut sandstone ashlar and features a moulded base, flat moulded capping, balusters at the ends, fluted cornice decoration, and quadrant corners on the side panels.

The second monument is a chest tomb for Thomas Sternhold II, who died in 1802. This tomb is also made of finely cut sandstone and has flat moulded capping, flat end panels, and side panels with quadrant corners and moulded margins.

The third monument is a chest tomb for the wife of William Marfell, who died in 1832. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, it has a moulded base, hipped capping, corner balusters, and quadrant corners with paterae on the margins of the side panels.

The fourth monument is a pedestal tomb for Sophia Marfell, who died in 1847. This tomb is made of sandstone ashlar and features a deeply moulded base and cornice with stepped capping, a moulded base to a square and curved hipped finial, a fluted frieze, and side panels with inverted batters and deeply moulded margins.

The fifth monument is a chest tomb for Thomas Price, who died in 1836. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a deeply moulded base, moulded hipped capping, a deep frieze supported by fluted and gadrooned corner balusters, and advanced side panels with moulded margins that include interlaced foliated designs in the corners.
