Description

This is a farmhouse with a 17th-century service wing and an early 18th-century main house, altered in the 20th century. The construction is of squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The main front is rendered and has a slate roof, hipped with swept eaves. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The building has a rectangular plan with a single-depth main block facing south, featuring a central entrance and end stacks. A U-shaped service wing adjoins to the northwest, extending northwest and southwest.

The three-story main house, with cellars, has a symmetrical facade. It features five glazing bar sash windows, with the upper floor windows being smaller in proportion. A central doorway is topped by a pedimented canopy supported on brackets, with a moulded architrave and a partly-glazed door. Above the doorway is a decorative lozenge-shaped panel bearing the initials “IT” and the date 1727. Two string courses are present on the returns (although those to the main front are presumably obscured by the later render). The service wing has a two-story and a single-story section to the left (west) of the main front and is set back. It includes a glazing bar sash window and a mid to late 19th-century canted bay with glazing bar sashes below.

The interior has not been inspected but is believed to contain a fine contemporary staircase. The farmhouse, together with the former granary (known as ‘Old Cider House’) to the southwest and the former stable (now a garage) to the southeast, forms a well-defined and interesting architectural composition.
