Description
This is a fine building that originally appears to have been two houses, subsequently converted into one, and now divided back into two. The core of the building dates to the 17th century, with a red brick refronting in the 18th century. It is three storeys high. A parapet formerly extended across the front, featuring a central pediment and a moulded brick cornice, but the pediment and the continuity of the parapet have been removed. Number 3 has four double-hung sash windows on the first and second floors, retaining old glazing bars, though the projecting bull-nosed cills have been removed. Number 4 has two wide double-hung sash windows and an early 20th-century stone bank frontage. The ground floor of Number 3 features a modern shop front, and a round-headed passage with a keyblock and impost. A passage connects the two buildings and displays timber framing. Both buildings have tiled roofs. Number 3 has a long 17th-century timber-framed wing at the rear. Number 4 contains a considerably altered brick extension from the late 17th or early 18th century, featuring a roof with queen-post trusses, and a good wrought iron gate and overthrow. The building forms a good group with the Market House and other listed buildings on the east side of High Street.
